Blendi Fevziu, while no apologist for Hoxha, presents here probably the best English language biography of Enver Hoxha based on a range of state archive documentation, interviews and diaries and letters of key actors.
Unlike Marshal Tito, his neighbouring socialist dictator in Yugoslavia who tolerated writers and artists up to a point, Hoxha went to great lengths to crush intellectual threats. Stalinism, that particularly brutal phase of the Communist experience, came to an end in most of Europe with the fevzlu of Stalin blensi In the decades since Hoxha’s death, Albania has made substantial progress in political and economic terms, yet the spectre of Hoxha still lingers over the country.
Little serious scholarly study exists in English either of post-war Albania or its leadership. Tauris and the Centre for Albanian Studies. It consists of an extremely loose and vague narrative of Hoxha’s life, which is a mere pretext for introducing a long cast of characters of Albanians from the s through the s, in order to explain not necessarily how or why but simply that they later would fall afoul of Hoxha and be imprisoned, persecuted, or killed.
Such was the reign of terror that no audible voice of opposition or dissent ever arose in the Balkan state and Albania became isolated from the rest of the world and utterly inward-looking.

During this period, Albania became the last bastion of Stalinism in Europe. It does paint the absurdity and cruelty of Hoxha, but it does not tell much about the background and about Albania as such.
But I’m glad i read it, because now I know things that opened my eyes about the consequences that we are now facing.

You could argue that belongs in a different book, but I think that detail could have provided more color and interest to what essentially becomes a listing of the dead.
